Our Story
How KBK Started, and What Has Not Changed Since
Kris Krause started KBK Landscaping Inc. in 1998, working for friends, family and small businesses around Saline while he was still in high school. By the time he graduated he had decided to turn it into a company, and he built it on a straightforward motto: high-quality work, knowledgeable staff and fair pricing. Nearly three decades later that is still how the business is run.
What has changed is scale. KBK now runs roughly 25 staff and a fully owned equipment fleet out of 9685 West Michigan Avenue, Saline, Michigan 48176, United States, covering residential, commercial and municipal properties across Washtenaw County and Southeast Michigan. Owning the machines rather than renting them is a deliberate choice — it means a grading job can happen in the two dry days a Michigan spring offers, and snow crews go out on a forecast instead of waiting on a phone call.
In 2018 the company expanded on that same groundwork by acquiring Nature’s Garden Center, renaming it KBK Garden Center and revamping it under new ownership — a larger selection of bulk stone, mulch and soils, a wider range of trees, shrubs and perennials, and since 2025 an on-site greenhouse growing some of that stock. It is a sister operation to the contracting business, and it is the reason KBK can supply the plants and materials for a project as well as design and install it.
What We Do
The Full Scope, and Who Each Part Is For
For homeowners the work is project-based: landscape design and installation, hardscaping such as paver patios, walkways and retaining walls, new lawns by sod, hydroseeding or straw seeding, and the grading and drainage work that has to come first when water is sitting where it should not.
For businesses, property managers and municipalities the work is contractual: commercial lawn care on a predictable weekly cycle through the growing season, and commercial snow removal with salting and de-icing on 24-hour call through the winter. Both are business-to-business services — KBK does not take on routine residential mowing or residential driveway plowing. Land owners and developers use our specialty services for field and roadside mowing, lot and brush clearing, and drainage work.
